PZ Star Jason Moon
Outputts the Field for Tarheel Tour Win

14 Sep. 2005 CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Jason Moon of Wake Forest birdied six of the first 11 holes Wednesday and cruised to the victory in the Tarheel Tour's Olde Sycamore Open at Olde Sycamore Golf Club. Moon, a former All-American at N.C. State, shot 65 to take home the $8,500 first-place check with a 14-under total of 202. It was the second professional victory for the 2003 Wolfpack graduate, and his first in a multi-day professional tourney.

"It was my day. I got up-and-down when I needed to and I holed some good putts," said Moon, who celebrated with his mom, who is visiting from Australia. "I shot 70 the first round, and the second day I started feeling more comfortable in my ball-striking. Today, I was firing on all cylinders." ΚΚΚ Moon's bogey-free round blew away the competition on a windy afternoon.

Second-round leader Erik Herberth of Cornelius finished runner-up to Moon. Herberth's last-hole birdie gave him a 71 to secure second place with a 206 total. He took home $4,300. Third place went to Aaron Black of Aiken, S.C. The former USC-Aiken standout matched Moon for the low round of the tournament by also firing 65. Black's round was aided by four birdies over the last seven holes. His 207 total netted him a $2,500 payday.

Tour money leader Matt Cannon of Huntersville and Pinehurst's David Sanchez tied for fourth at 209 and earned $1,750 apiece. Cannon closed with a two-under 70, while Sanchez shot even-par 72. ΚΚΚ There was also a tie for sixth place as Justin Walters (67) and David Siegel (71) finished at 210 and took home $1,250 each.

Moon began working with putting coach Geoff Mangum in May 2005 at the Wachovia Championship in Charlotte. After his Olde Sycamore win, Moon went on the next month to win again at the Cowans Ford Open. After his Cowans Ford victory, Moon contacted Mangum for a brief touch-up session to correct his difficulties with the missed short putts. Mangum and Moon worked at the Country Club of Whispering Pines in advance of Moon's try in the PGA Tour Q-School first stage at Florence, SC. Moon advanced to the second stage with a T6 finish, and now heads to McKinney, Texas for the second stage competition beginning Novenber 9, 2005.
