Phil Galvano,

Secrets of accurate putting and chipping (Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1957).

Hardcover, OOP 100 pp.

Book auction info from PBA Galleries:

Galvano, Phil , The Gentle Arts of Putting & Chipping ( London : Stanley Paul [1959])

John Garrity & Bill Jaspersohn,

Putting: The Stroke-Savers Guide (Sports Illustrated Winners Circle Books) (Sports Illustrated 1991).

Paperback, 126 pp. $9.95. Garrity is a sports writer. This book is fairly competent albeit conventional and basic. Not especially insightful or analytical, and not filled with techniques of the pros. Has chapters on short-game strokes around the green. Okay but could be better.

Golf Digest,

All About Putting, (Coward McCann & Geoghegan 1973)

Hardback. Out-of-Print. A good survey of great putters from history and their styles, plus some unusual techniques. Certainly a substantial book. Now out of print, but still available. Nice for history buffs, too!

Mildly recommended.

Book auction info from PBA Galleries:

[Golf Digest] , All About Putting ( New York : Coward, McCann & Geoghegan [1973])

Golf Digest (Nick Seitz)

Golf Digest: Special Putting Issue 1970 (Golf Digest 1970), paperback.

Golf Magazine (Greg Midland / Dave Allen),

Better by Saturday: Putting

(NY: Warner Books, 2004).

Hardcover, 95 pages, $15.00. One-page tips from a variety of teachers in seven chapters: 1. The Setup (6 tips); 2. The Stroke (9 tips); 3. Speed Putts (5 tips); 4. Short Putts (6 tips); 5. Long Putts (4 tips); 6. Green Reading (3 tips); 7. Practice (7 tips). Most of these tips are simply re-served from the past with a new instructor's name on it -- and like all tips culled from the general store of golf instruction for putting, they are vague, inconsistent, and conflicting. If you like a slice-and-dice approach to putting, which amounts to lots of bandaids and bailing wire everywhere, then this sort of book is for you. If you simply want to get an overview of the basic collection of putting lore that evryone repeats all the time, then this book is cheap and convenient.

Tepidly recommended.

Golf Magazine,

Golf Magazine's Handbook of Putting (Harper & Row 1973).

Hardback, 191 pp. Out of print. A good general survey of putting technique and styles, with pointers on choosing putters, practicing, and psychology. Nice photo sequence of Casper putting. About on a par with the Golf Digest book, All About Putting.

Mildly recommended.

Paul Harney,

How to Putt (Sterling, 1965).

Paperback, OOP, $25.00.

HA Hattstrom,

The "In Line" Method of Putting and Approach Play (Evanston, IL: Hattstrom Specialties, 1959).

28pp, paperback, OOP.

Richard E. Heyl & Glenn R. Apple

The Long View of Improved Putting -- Using the Long Putter (Sterling VA: Leaning Pine Pub., 1999).

Softcover, 148 pages, $25.95 from Leaning Pine Publishing, 706 W Jasper Ct, Sterling VA 20164-5015, 1-800-606-8399. This is the ONLY book devoted to using the broomstick putter, and it's a very detailed, comprehensive, and informative guide. The original edition was written in 1999 before the trend to belly putters, but is still very helpful in that technique as well. Nicely organized coverage of all aspects of putting with the long putter, including mechanics, practice, pros, and putter selection. This book contains more solid information about the long putter and effective techniques with long putters than any other source in golf. Extensive bibliography. Foreword by David Feherty. LOOK FOR THE NEW electronic EDITION EARLY IN 2006!

Also Systems Approach to Golfing

Highly recommended.

Steve Hosid,

Putting--speed & accuracy (Game improvement library)

(PGA Tour Partners Club 2001), 176 pp.

Bobby Jones,

Classic Instruction (Broadway 1998).

Hardback, 144 pp. $17.50. Somewhat odd mechanics and setup but great for touch and the nature of the stroke.

Recommended.

Tom Kite,

ESPN Golf - Lower Your Score with Tom Kite-The Full Swing and Putt (Audio CD)

OOP. Kite's main book, How to Play Consistent Golf, is pretty well written. However, he has changed his putting technique several times, and is currently not that hot. He used left-hand-low for a long time.

Alexander Kšlbing

Golf: Putt. (BLV Verlagsgesellschaft 2001) (in German), 36 pp.

Alexander Kšlbing and Achim Steinfurth

Richtig Golf rund ums Grźn. Chip, Pitch, Putt und Sand. (BLV Verlagsgesellschaft 1997) (in German), 127 pp.

Jerry Korte

The Proof is in the Putting

Excellent teaching on the putting stroke, from a top PGA veteran teacher in Wisconsin. Korte has worked with Steve Stricker (a perennial top putter on Tour).

Highly rercommended.

Berhard Langer & Vivien Saunders,

Langer on Putting (David & Charles 1988), 160 pp.

Hardback, Out of Print. I haven't read this yet, but I suspect it's pretty tame. Vivien Saunders is pretty good, but I doubt Langer has deep insights into putting. But who knows? He putts well in the Masters, and he's extremely analytical and critical. He spends two or more weeks considering which golf shoes to use.

Derek Lawrenson,

Golf Basics: The Short Game (Golf Basics) (Triumph, 1996).

Paperback.

Yvon Legault

Become a Putting Machine (1st Book 2004), 152 pp.

Yvon Legault teaches in Canada, and this book is written as if a novice golfer were absorbing the lessons of a veteran teacher. The insights are keen and the whole approach substantial and valuable. A very good book!

Highly recommended.

Bret Leifer,

Puttingmagic.com (Magic Press 1999), 131 pp. paperback.

Beverly Lewis,

Perfecting Your Short Game: Cure Your Putting Problems (Play Better Golf Series) (Smithmark Publishers 1994)

OOP. A generally sound instuctor.

Noah Liberman,

The Flat Stick: The History, Romance, and Heartbreak of the Putter (Collins 2006), 240 pp.

Interesting history and inside-the-ropes Tour anecdotes, but a little off on his stats.

Bobby Locke,

Bobby Locke on golf (Country Life 1953).

Hardback. Out of print. Locke's book covers the whole game, with only a scant chapter on putting, obviously his greatest strength as a golfer. Still, it has to be read.

Recommended.

Book auction info from PBA Galleries:

Ronald Norval ,King of the links: The story of Bobby Locke ( Cape Town : Maskew Miller Ltd. (1951)
Locke, Bobby , Bobby Locke on Golf ( London : Country Lift Ltd. [1953])

Locke, Bobby. , Bobby Locke's South African Golf Annual, 1948. ( Johannesburg : L.E. Joseph 1948)
Locke, Bobby. , How to Imporve Your Putting. ( Various places : various dates Item # : 36502 Description: Pamphlet. 1949. Ą The Basis of My Game. Wraps. [c.1949]

George Low and Al Barkow,

The MASTER OF PUTTING (Master of Putting CL) (Lyons & Burford 1983).

Paperback, 84 pp. $10.36. George Low played on Tour in the 1940s and then turned to teaching putting and betting against others in putting. He became a legendary teacher of pros (including Arnold Palmer), and his book is definitely one of the best available for its insights into technique. Again, Al Barkow comes through.

Highly recommended.

Robert H. Lowig,

Always putt in two!: (with little or no practice) : a putting method for the part-time golfer (Lodat Indus. 1997).

57 pages.

Geoffrey Lucas,

Minds Eye Golf Is Golf: Targetting and Aiming (Mind's Eye "Sport" , No 1999) (AZ Edge 1998), 187 pp.

The NEW Images of Golf: The Fundamentals of Visualization and Scoring 2nd Edition (A2Z Publishing).

Geoffrey Lucas,

One Putting: The Theory and Practice (A2Z Publishing).

Geoffrey Lucas, Frank Sanchez Jr., and Jerry Borro,

Six One Putts ... Minimum, to Cure a Sick Golf Score (A2Z Publishing).

Iaen McLachlan

Putting Tips From The Top - Rules On Golf Putting (Rigby Ltd. 1980).

Allan Markle,

The psychology of putting (Monte Sano Press 1977), 37 pp.

Jim McLean,

Complete Idiot's Guide to Improving Your Short Game (Alpha Books 2000).

Paperback, 352 pp. $15.16. Jim McLean is usually pretty safe. His Putter's Pocket Companion with Fran Pirozzolo is pretty good. This book has a few interesting tips from the pros that you don't find elsewhere. Lots and lots of good non-putting golf instruction, too. So, it's probably a keeper, if a little conservative.

Jim McLean and Fran Pirrozollo,

The Putter's Pocket Companion (Collins 1994), 128 pp.

A very modest little effort with one or two good tips.

Jim McLean,

The 3 Scoring Clubs : How to Raise the Level of Your Driving, Pitching, and Putting Games (Amazon remainder 2005), 304 pp.

Devotes a chapter to how he "fixed" Sergio garcia's putting by advising him to continue with his idiosyncratic technique, by which Sergio remained dead last in putting skills on the PGA Tour.

Sol Metzger,

Putting analyzed, (NY: Double, Doran & Co., 1929).

Hardcover, OOP, 102pp.

Book auction info from PBA Galleries:

Metzger, Sol, Putting Analyzed (Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Co., 1929)

Tom Michael and Cary Middlecoff,

Golf's Winning Stroke Putting (Coward-McCann 1967).

Hardback, 189 pp. Out of print. Tom Michael was associated with Cary Middlecoff, and this book dates from just after Middlecoff's dominating years on Tour. The text is surprisingly astute and filled with details of Tour technique. Perhaps a cut above the Golf Digest and Golf Magazine books of a few years later.

Recommended.

Tony Moore and David Hutchinson

Putt for Lower Scores (Canary Publications 1997), 48 pp.

Aidan Moran,

The Pressure Putt (Tutorial Services UK 1998) (audio cassette).

Peter Morrice,

The Golf Magazine Putting Handbook (Golf Magazine) (Lyons Press, 2000).

144 pages. Part of a series. Not very well done; conventional, tired old stuff.
