Round 4 Summary
As expected, Webb's five-shot lead proved too daunting
for Se Ri Pak, who did not get the flatstick working even for short
birdie putts that would have gotten her in close. Still, with Webb
shooting 1-under for the day (69), Pak would have had to shoot 64
just to tie and force an 18-hole playoff. So Karrie put her game
on cruise control and kept going for fairways and greens. She hit
two fairly dramatic putts on the 71st (40-foot "goobler")
and 72nd holes (20-footer) to extend her margin of victory over
the field to 7 shots, the greatest margin in 21 years of Open history.
Dottie Pepper had a good round, too, and finished sole 3rd. Of the
150 Open contestants, Webb was the ONLY player to fiish 72 holes
at less than par.

GIRs! Still bogeying. Day 3: Even fewer GIRs and more bogeys.

Round 3 Summary
Karrie Web pours it on while every major contender
except Se Re Pak fades, giving Webb a 5-shot lead over Se Ri Pak.
Only six times in Open history has a player overcome a five-shot
deficit in the final round, so it's fairly unlikely Pak can catch
Webb. Barring something pretty unfortunate for Webb, it's just about
Lights Out time at the US Women's Open. The weather is great this
Sunday morning, so that won't be a factor. Peggy Kirk bell predicted
something like 6 under would win, so expect Webb to shoot even to
2-under today and get out of Dodge with her second Open title in
a row.
Analysis of performance stats says everyone exceptWebb,
Pak and Matthew are not having great tournaments. So the field is
basically falling back some. Some details:

Round 2 Summary
Play Suspended For Day Pine Needles, N.C. -- Play
was halted until Saturday because of inclement weather. Torrential
rain and hail stopped play for good at 2:36 p.m., after the championship
had been halted two previous times due to lightning. More than two
inches of rain had fallen from 2:45-4:30 p.m. The overall delay
lasted four hours and 33 minutes. The driving range will open at
5:30 a.m. Saturday and play will resume at 7 a.m., picking up with
the second round. Thirteen groups (39 players) from Friday were
still waiting to tee off. Of the 150 players in the field, 105 of
them had not completed Friday's round.
Among those who finished were Karrie Webb with a blistering
65 and julie Inkster witha 2-over 72. Annika Sorensam played two
holes at +1 (bogeyed the second hole) before play was suspended.
Se Ri Pak also played these two holes at even. Webb's putting got
hot, getting around the second time in 8 fewer putts than the first
round (34 putts versus 26 putts). The greens should play easier
now, but if the tee shots don't roll much, this gives an advantage
to players with a lot of carry and who otherwise get in trouble
with balls rolling out of the fairway into the rough, rather than
simply hitting into the rough. I believe this favors Webb a bit
over Sorenstam.
Round 1 Summary
Round 1 kicked off the Championship without too many surprises.
Greens-in-regulation and keeping bogeys off the card tell the real
story here. The current leaders are not doing too well with hitting
greens in regulation, but they are keeping bogeys off. The dangerous
contenders, Webb and Sorenstam, hit lots of greens in regulation
but didn't keep the card as clean. Watch for the players hitting
the greens consistently to overtake the field, and watch in that
group to see who is keeping relatively bogey-free.
